BUCKHANNON — Buckhannon Mayor David McCauley proclaimed May 3, 2018, as “Bill Hamilton Day” and awarded Del. Bill Hamilton the city’s Ambassador Award in recognition of his years of public service to the Buckhannon-Upshur community.
Hamilton, a longtime Buckhannon resident, has represented the area in the West Virginia House of Delegates since January 2003, serving constituents in the 39th and later the 45th House Districts.
In a mayoral proclamation issued Thursday, McCauley praised Hamilton for his support of Buckhannon city government and his work in the Legislature, particularly as chairman of the House Natural Resources Committee and vice chairman of the State Pensions and Retirement Committee.
The proclamation credited Hamilton with supporting initiatives benefiting the local environment and municipal employees, while also helping secure state grants and programs that aided the Buckhannon Police Department, Buckhannon Fire Department and the Stockert Youth & Community Center.
McCauley also recognized Hamilton for supporting public education and teachers across West Virginia during the recent legislative session.
“Our Buckhannon-Upshur community appreciates and values the efforts, energy and dedication of one of our finest residents,” the proclamation stated.
As part of the honor, the city installed a permanent placard on the “Ambassadors’ Bench” on East Main Street in front of the Stockert Youth Center recognizing Hamilton’s service and dedication to Buckhannon.
The bench inscription reads: “The Ambassadors’ Bench, Honoring Those Who Selflessly Dedicated Their Lives to the Service, Promotion, and Advancement of Buckhannon.”
The Ambassador Award is considered one of the city’s highest honors and has been awarded to only a small number of recipients, according to the proclamation.
McCauley urged residents to join city officials, Hamilton’s family and friends in recognizing the delegate during Thursday’s observance.
