Coal miner dies after accident at Wyoming County mine

CHARLESTON — A coal miner died following an accident at the Lower War Eagle mine in Wyoming County, Gov. Patrick Morrisey said Tuesday.

In a statement, Morrisey expressed condolences to the miner’s family and coworkers and said the state has launched an investigation into the incident.

“Denise and I were deeply saddened by the tragic loss of a coal miner today at the Lower War Eagle mine in Wyoming County,” Morrisey said. “Our hearts go out to his family, loved ones, and coworkers during this sorrowful time.”

The West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health, Safety, and Training responded to the scene and is conducting a full investigation, according to the governor’s office. Morrisey said the agency “responded immediately.”

The governor also highlighted the work performed by coal miners across the state, calling it difficult and demanding labor that supports families and communities.

Morrisey asked residents to keep those affected by the death in their thoughts and prayers in the days ahead.
