Maynard Defeats Three Challengers to Win GOP Nomination in Senate District 6

WAYNE — Incumbent Sen. Mark Maynard secured the Republican nomination for the 6th Senatorial District on Tuesday, defeating challengers Jeff Disibbio, Eric Porterfield and Edwin Ray Vanover in a four-way primary contest.

Maynard, who has represented the district since 2015, won the race with 2,860 votes, or 49.7% of the total vote. Disibbio finished second with 1,693 votes (29.4%), followed by Porterfield with 864 votes (15.0%) and Vanover with 343 votes (6.0%).

The district includes all of Mingo, Wayne, McDowell and Mercer counties. A total of 5,760 votes were cast in the Republican primary.

Disibbio previously ran as the Democratic nominee for the State Senate seat in the prior election cycle before switching parties and entering this year’s Republican primary.

Maynard posted his strongest performance in Mingo County, where he received 840 votes, or 81.2% of the vote. He also carried Wayne County with 362 votes (82.5%) and narrowly won Mercer County with 1,495 votes (38.6%). McDowell County was the only county not won by Maynard, with Disibbio leading there.

Disibbio performed best in Mercer County, where he earned 1,444 votes, or 37.3% of the vote. He also carried McDowell County with 134 votes (32.4%), narrowly ahead of Maynard’s 163 votes (39.4%) in the county’s divided four-way field.

Porterfield’s strongest showing came in Mercer County, where he received 709 votes, or 18.3% of the countywide total. Vanover also saw his best performance in Mercer County with 224 votes (5.8%).

County-by-county results were as follows:

Mingo County: Maynard 840 (81.2%), Disibbio 73 (7.1%), Porterfield 69 (6.7%), Vanover 53 (5.1%).

Wayne County: Maynard 362 (82.5%), Disibbio 42 (9.6%), Porterfield 25 (5.7%), Vanover 10 (2.3%).

McDowell County: Maynard 163 (39.4%), Disibbio 134 (32.4%), Porterfield 61 (14.7%), Vanover 56 (13.5%).

Mercer County: Maynard 1,495 (38.6%), Disibbio 1,444 (37.3%), Porterfield 709 (18.3%), Vanover 224 (5.8%).

Maynard currently serves on several Senate committees, including Transportation and Infrastructure, Finance, Government Organization, Health and Human Resources, Enrolled Bills, and Rules.
