Toby Heaney Wins GOP Primary for West Virginia’s 2nd Senate District Seat

FAIRVIEW — Toby Heaney won the Republican primary Tuesday for West Virginia’s 2nd Senatorial District, defeating Robert Dobkin in a six-county race to succeed retiring Sen. Charles Clements (R-Wetzel).

Heaney secured the nomination with 3,707 votes, or 54.7%, while Dobkin received 3,068 votes, or 45.3%, according to unofficial results.

Heaney carried four of the district’s six counties, posting his strongest performance in Monongalia County, where he received 1,210 votes, or 80.4%, compared with 294 votes, or 19.6%, for Dobkin. Heaney also won Marion County with 826 votes, or 92.8%, while Dobkin received 64 votes, or 7.2%. In Doddridge County, Heaney earned 630 votes, or 74.1%, to Dobkin’s 220 votes, or 25.9%. Dobkin also grabbed Tyler County with 619 votes (55.1%), while Heaney received 504 votes (44.9%).

Dobkin won Marshall County with 1,300 votes, or 88.7%, compared with 165 votes, or 11.3%, for Heaney. Dobkin also carried Wetzel County with 571 votes, or 60.6%, while Heaney received 372 votes, or 39.4%.

Heaney’s largest raw vote total came in Monongalia County, while his highest percentage came in Marion County. Dobkin’s strongest county both by vote total and percentage was Marshall County.

Overall, Heaney won the Republican nomination with 3,707 votes (54.7%) to Dobkin’s 3,068 votes (45.3%) out of 6,775 votes cast.
