CHARLESTON — On March 2nd, the House of Delegates passed a bill clarifying that strikes and work stoppages by public employees are illegal.
SB 11 passed by a 53-46 margin and will return to the senate, where it already passed, to be reapproved after minor changes. Delegates removed a provision in the bill that would have terminated extracurricular activities during a work stoppage.
While interpretations of case law have already determined teacher strikes to be illegal in West Virginia, this legislation will officially establish such practices as being unlawful in state code.
