MARTINSBURG — On Tuesday, Senate President Craig Blair was defeated by challenger Tom Willis in the Republican primary.
Willis emerged victorious with 5,439 votes, securing 44.4% of the total vote. Senate President Craig Blair garnered 32.2% of the vote, while another contender, Michael Folk, received 23.4%.
Despite Blair’s political experience, Willis has a military background as a U.S. Army Special Forces Green Beret and is a member of the West Virginia National Guard, which gave him a distinct advantage in connecting with voters and ultimately securing the lead.
“We’re feeling pretty confident that we’ll bring this one home,” Willis remarked on WEPM Radio as the election results were coming in.
When asked about his thoughts on Senate President Blair, Willis replied, “Craig Blair ran a very combative race, and I’ve got a lot of respect for him and for the competitor that he is. Nothing negative to say at all. Just thankful for the victory, and like I said, all glory to God.”
Tom Willis is set to face Anthony Murray, the Democratic nominee, in the upcoming November 5th election.
