JANE LEW — At just 31 years old, Patrick Martin of Jane Lew is set to make history as the youngest majority leader in the West Virginia Senate, ushering in a new era of leadership for the Republican-dominated chamber.
Incoming Senate President Randy Smith, who will take the helm following a caucus vote earlier this month, announced Martin’s selection for the key leadership role. Smith spoke highly of Martin’s capabilities and potential.
“Patrick has been a standout in the Senate,” Smith told WV MetroNews. “He’s the hidden gem in our chamber, but that won’t be the case for much longer. I have no doubt he will go down as one of the most effective majority leaders in West Virginia’s history.”
As majority leader, Martin will take on significant responsibilities, including steering the Senate’s procedural agenda and advocating for the Republican Party’s legislative priorities. Smith’s decision signals confidence in Martin’s ability to guide the Senate through its upcoming session.
“I am honored to serve under Randy Smith as he becomes Senate President and excited to work alongside all my colleagues in the Senate,” Senator Martin told WV MetroNews. “Randy is a Godly man whose dedication to faith, family, and the people of West Virginia sets a strong example for us all. As the youngest Majority Leader in West Virginia Senate history, I’m eager to bring fresh energy to our work and help guide our state toward a brighter future.”
Martin, a Republican representing Lewis County, joined the Senate in 2020 and was recently re-elected without opposition in both the primary and general elections. Before his Senate tenure, Martin served in the House of Delegates, beginning in 2017.
The leadership change follows the defeat of current Senate President Craig Blair in the Republican primary, prompting a shift at the top. Smith was chosen to succeed Blair after a race defeating senators Tom Takubo and Eric Tarr.
Martin’s rise to Majority Leader reflects the Republican caucus’ focus on fostering new leadership while maintaining a strong commitment to its legislative agenda. Smith emphasized Martin’s potential to make an impact during his tenure.
