CHARLESTON — Sen. Laura Wakim Chapman (R-1) has been appointed as the new chairwoman of the Senate Health and Human Resources Committee. The announcement marks a significant step in her legislative career as she prepares to tackle some of West Virginia’s most pressing health and human services issues.
In a statement, Sen. Chapman expressed her excitement and commitment to the role:
“I am pleased to announce that I was appointed Chair of the Senate Health Committee. I look forward to improve accessibility to healthcare, lowering health costs, and shortening wait times for our citizens. The committee will find creative solutions for mental health and addiction treatment, childcare, foster care, and other issues. We will also look for ways to support our health professionals and find ways to expand the workforce. I thank Senate President Smith for trusting me to help shape the health policy of West Virginia.”
Chapman, a vocal advocate for health freedom, has long championed the idea that individuals should have the ability to make their own healthcare decisions. She has been particularly focused on lowering the barriers to accessing necessary medical services and ensuring that health policies reflect the values of West Virginians. Her appointment as chairwoman signals a new chapter in her efforts to reform the state’s healthcare system.
Throughout her tenure in the Senate, Sen. Chapman has worked closely with conservative colleagues to align state health policies with broader national initiatives. One can expect this legislature to work in cooperation with President Donald Trump’s initiative to Make America Healthy Again, which emphasizes personal choice in healthcare, affordable options, and a stronger emphasis on private sector solutions to healthcare challenges. Chapman has expressed a desire to bring these principles to the forefront of her work in the committee.
As she steps into this pivotal role, Sen. Chapman will work to ensure the committee’s efforts align with her vision for a healthier, more accessible healthcare system for all West Virginians.
