CHARLESTON — West Virginia State Senator Tom Willis (R-15) has been named the new Vice Chairman of the West Virginia Senate Judiciary Committee, replacing Sen. Ryan Weld (R-1) who will take on the role as chair of the Senate Military Committee.
“I’m honored and excited to serve WV as Vice Chair of the WV Senate Judiciary Committee,” said Willis in a statement. “Thank you to Senate President Randy Smith for placing his confidence in me for this important role.”
Willis, a freshman senator, has a strong legal background that is expected to benefit his new position overseeing key legislative matters related to law and order in the state.
Senator Weld, who had served as Vice Chairman of the Judiciary Committee for the past several years, will now focus his efforts on chairing the Senate Military Committee. In his new role, Weld will be responsible for overseeing issues related to military affairs and veterans’ services.
In the 2024 Republican Primary, Willis secured a decisive victory over Former Senate President Craig Blair, winning in a landslide that surprised many political observers. Willis, a relative newcomer to the upper chambers of the West Virginia Legislature, ran a campaign focused on fresh leadership, fiscal responsibility, and strong conservative values, which resonated with voters across the district. Despite Blair’s established political presence and significant name recognition, Willis’ message of integrity and his ability to connect with everyday West Virginians propelled him to a commanding win, marking a shift in the state’s political landscape. The victory solidified Willis’ reputation as a rising star within the GOP, positioning him for continued influence in state politics.
Willis’ appointment also marks a continued shift in leadership within the state senate, as lawmakers continue to work through the priorities of the 2025 legislative session.
