ITMANN — Core Natural Resources has issued Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notices to approximately 200 coal miners in southern West Virginia, the company confirmed Tuesday.
The layoffs are expected to take place by Aug. 1 at the Itmann No. 5 Mine and the Itmann Coal Preparation Plant in Wyoming County.
In a statement to MetroNews, the company cited unfavorable market and economic conditions for the impending workforce reductions.
“Itmann Mining Company LP, which is a subsidiary of Core Natural Resources, Inc., today informed workers that it plans to idle part or all of its operations at its Itmann Mine #5 and its Itmann Preparation Plant in early August due to weaker than expected market conditions and economic forces impacting the industry and the mine,” the company said. “More than 200 employees are expected to be affected by the idling.”
Under federal law, companies are required to issue WARN notices at least 60 days in advance of mass layoffs or closures.
In a statement provided by the Governor’s Office exclusively to Mountaineer Journal, Gov. Patrick Morrisey expressed concern for the affected workers.

“Coal miners built West Virginia, and we owe it to them to look out for their best interest at all times. I am saddened to hear of the reported layoffs in Wyoming County,” Gov. Morrisey stated. “My administration is committed to helping these folks and their families find meaningful work as quickly as possible.”
Core Natural Resources was formed earlier this year through the merger of Arch Resources and Consol Energy.
