CHARLESTON — Northern West Virginia is still under a Code Orange Air Quality Alert as smoke from Canadian wildfires continues to drift into portions of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic according to state environmental officials.
The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection issued the alert, warning that air pollution levels could become unhealthy for sensitive groups, including children, older adults and people with asthma, heart disease or other respiratory illnesses.
Health officials recommend those at higher risk limit prolonged or strenuous outdoor activity until air quality improves. Reducing time spent outdoors can help lessen exposure to fine particulate matter carried by wildfire smoke.
Air quality is expected to improve over the next two days as weather conditions change.
