In a remarkable demonstration of compassion, more than $50,000 has been raised through a GoFundMe fundraiser supporting the family of Sarah Beckstrom, one of two West Virginia National Guard soldiers shot in Washington, D.C., the day before Thanksgiving. Beckstrom tragically passed away on Thanksgiving Day, while fellow soldier Andrew Wolfe continues to fight for his life, but shows significant signs of improvement.

The fundraiser, launched by Mountaineer Journal has brought together Christians, West Virginians, and Americans to help the Beckstrom family during this unimaginably difficult time.

“We are deeply moved by the outpouring of love and generosity,” Mountaineer Journal publisher Caiden Cowger said. “Every contribution is a reminder of the strength of our state and the compassion West Virginians carry in their hearts. I want to thank everyone who has given, shared, or lifted this family in prayer. I am also grateful to Sen. Brian Helton (R – Fayette, 9) and the Governor’s Office for their coordination and care throughout this process.”

Cowger continued by reflecting on the Christian call to serve others, noting that faith calls for practical acts of love during times of hardship.

“The Apostle Paul tells us in Galatians 6:10, Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.

The Beckstroms are a devout Christian family, rooted in Christ and His Church.

In Galatians 6:2, Paul also writes, Bear one another’s burdens, and thus fulfill the law of Christ.

As Christians, when someone experiences the weight of a hardship, we help them carry the weight; and when they stumble, we lift them up. Supporting fellow believers through hardship is not optional, it is a calling that defines the Christian life. This is our obligation, and we will continue to support and stand with this precious family throughout this unimaginably difficult time. Christ gets all the glory for the success of our efforts.”

In a public statement posted on social media, Sen. Helton confirmed that he has been in direct communication with Sarah Beckstrom’s mother, offering his personal support and coordinating with local and state resources to assist the family during this difficult time.

Helton

“Last night I spoke with Sarah’s mother, Evalea Beckstrom, who shared their deep love for her and their gratitude for the overwhelming support.”

Helton stated Beckstrom’s mother expressed appreciation for the GoFundMe campaign organized by Mountaineer Journal.

“She is thankful for the official GoFundMe initiated by Caiden Cowger and Mountaineer Journal,” Helton wrote. “Sarah Beckstrom was a true American hero who made the ultimate sacrifice. Please keep this wonderful family in your prayers during this very difficult time.”

The ongoing fundraising effort ensures that the Beckstrom family can access assistance for unforeseen expenses and receive support from a grateful state and nation that mourns with them while honoring Sarah’s life and service on behalf of our country.
