BUCKHANNON — On October 30th, U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R) stopped in Upshur County just 4 days before the 2020 general election. Capito met with the Chairwoman of the Upshur County Republican Executive Committee Patty Adams, along with local republican candidates and supporters at 88 East Main Street.

In an exclusive interview with Mountaineer Journal, Capito expressed that she hopes to continue advancing her broadband initiative and attracting more jobs to West Virginia.

“I would like to continue what I started,” Capito stated. “A lot of that has to do with economic development, whether it’s getting more broadband, whether it’s getting more jobs into the state, whether it’s helping us transition and also helping our energy industries. We have an opioid crisis. We need to make sure that we’re still addressing the issues for families and folks who are highly affected by that.”

Capito also stressed the importance of passing a ‘care package’ to help Americans financially as they deal with the economic implications of the coronavirus pandemic. Furthermore, she criticized House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D), calling for lawmakers to avoid politicizing the health crisis.

When asked what she hopes to accomplish if given another term to serve in the U.S. Senate, Capito stated:

“Obviously, in the immediate, the COVID care package that we didn’t pass, because Nancy Pelosi decided to politicize the whole thing, we need to get that for small businesses for individuals, and for our schools. I’m ready to get back to work and roll up my sleeves. I think it’s going to be a different kind of year in 2021, but I’m looking forward to it. I just hope I can be successful in my campaign and be able to do the good things again.”

Capito is running against Paula Jean Swearengin (D) for the U.S. Senate.
