Hamilton votes in support of taxpayer-funded marijuana for those on government assistance.

CHARLESTON — On March 2nd, Sen. Bill Hamilton (R-11) joined democratic leadership in supporting an amendment that would allow taxpayer funds to be used to purchase marijuana by those receiving government assistance.

Sen. Ron Stollings (D-7) introduced an amendment to S.B. 387, which sought to strike out the word ‘marijuana’ from substances that would be checked on drug tests administered when a person applies for cash assistance. This would have allowed taxpayer money to be used for the purpose of purchasing marijuana for illegal recreational use by welfare recipients.

Republican senators Hamilton and Eric Nelson (R-17) joined 9 democratic senators in supporting the amendment.

The Stollings Amendment failed 21-11.
