BUCKHANNON — The Upshur County Sheriff’s Department reported a tense early-morning chase that resulted in the arrest of 19-year-old Dakota Paul Alderman on March 24, 2025, following an attempted car break-in on Valley Green Drive.
The incident unfolded at approximately 5:03 AM, when the Upshur County Sheriff’s Office was alerted by a 911 call made to the county’s communication center. The caller reported seeing two individuals attempting to break into a parked vehicle—a 2021 grey Jeep Compass—across from their residence. The caller described the suspects as fleeing the scene on foot toward the entrance of Valley Green Drive.
Deputy Lamb responded to the call and quickly spotted two figures matching the description running away from the area. The officer gave chase. The suspects, realizing they were being pursued, split up, each attempting to evade capture. Deputy Lamb focused on the individual closest to him, ultimately apprehending the suspect after a brief foot pursuit.
The suspect, later identified as Dakota Paul Alderman, was taken into custody without further incident.
An investigation revealed that the victim, who had witnessed the break-in attempt, confirmed Alderman’s involvement. According to the victim, Alderman had been seen attempting to open the door of the Jeep, while a second individual was present but unidentifiable at the time of the arrest.
During a search of Alderman’s person, law enforcement officers discovered items of interest in his fanny pack, including a large black beanie, a black glove, and a yellow and black flathead screwdriver—tools commonly associated with break-ins.
Alderman has been charged with attempted grand larceny, attempted breaking and entering of an automobile, obstructing an officer, and fleeing on foot. He was subsequently transported to the Tygart Valley Regional Jail where he is currently being held.
As of now, the investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are continuing to search for the second suspect. The Upshur County Sheriff’s Office has not released additional information regarding the identity or whereabouts of the second individual involved in the crime.
This arrest comes at a time when local law enforcement has stepped up efforts to combat property crime in the community. With Alderman now in custody, authorities are hopeful this case will serve as a deterrent to those considering similar actions in the future.
