CHARLESTON — Charleston police have identified a suspect in connection with a bank robbery that occurred Thursday morning in the Kanawha City area.

Authorities said an arrest warrant has been issued for Gary Lee Whitten, 60, of Charleston. He is wanted on a charge of first-degree robbery following the incident at United Bank on MacCorkle Avenue.
According to investigators, Whitten entered the bank around 10 a.m. and handed a teller a note indicating a robbery. Allegedly, he also implied he had a weapon, prompting the teller to hand over an undisclosed amount of cash.
Whitten then fled the scene on foot, heading east into an alley behind the bank, police said.
At the time of the robbery, he was allegedly wearing a gray shirt and black shorts.
Anyone with information on Whitten’s whereabouts is asked to contact the Charleston Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division at 304-348-6480 or Metro Communications at 304-348-8111.
