WASHINGTON — U.S. Senate Democratic Minority Leader Chuck Schumer expressed that he believes an economic recession will take place as the coronavirus continues to spread across the United States.
“The coronavirus is slowing our economy to a near standstill and we are almost certainly anticipating a recession,” Schumer expressed on the Senate Floor.
To combat the economic impact on American households, Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) and President Donald Trump proposed issuing $1,000 checks to all adult Americans.
On Wednesday, Schumer criticized the proposal, instead recommending an increase in unemployment benefits. Many believe that Schumer’s proposal is ineffective and overtly partisan because most Americans are not enrolled in unemployment. Therefore, this would require a mass enrollment. Furthermore, it would require an online application to comply with CDC guidelines, which not every American has access to.
