Phil Robertson, Patriarch of ‘Duck Dynasty’ and Reality TV Icon, Dies at 79

MONROE, LA — Phil Robertson, the beloved patriarch of the Robertson family and star of the hit reality series Duck Dynasty, has died at the age of 79 following a battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

His death comes more than a month after his son Jase Robertson publicly shared that his father was “not good” in his health battle. The family announced Phil’s passing on Sunday in a heartfelt Facebook post from daughter-in-law Korie Robertson.

“We celebrate today that our father, husband, and grandfather, Phil Robertson, is now with the Lord,” Korie wrote. “Thank you for the love and prayers of so many whose lives have been impacted by his life saved by grace, by his bold faith, and by his desire to tell everyone who would listen the Good News of Jesus.”

Quoting the Apostle Paul, the Robertsons added,

“You do not grieve like those who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.”

The family said a private service is being held, with plans for a public celebration of life to be announced soon.

Phil Robertson rose to national fame as the grizzled, scripture-quoting face of Duck Dynasty, the A&E reality series that followed the lives of the Louisiana-based Robertson clan and their family-owned business, Duck Commander. The show debuted in 2012 and quickly became a cultural phenomenon, peaking in 2013 as the most-watched nonfiction cable series in television history.

Viewers were drawn to the family’s blend of humor, faith, and southern charm — from Phil and his wife Kay to their children Willie, Jase, Jep, and their extended family including Uncle Si and granddaughter Sadie Robertson. At the heart of it all was Phil, known for his trademark long gray beard, deep devotion to his Christian faith, and passionate belief in traditional values.

“We are grateful for his life on earth and will continue the legacy of love for God and love for others until we see him again,” the Robertson family wrote in closing.

The Robertson family’s influence extended well beyond television. Through books, speaking engagements, and ministry work, Phil Robertson remained a prominent figure in evangelical circles, often sharing his testimony of redemption and faith.

He is survived by his wife, Kay, his children, and numerous grandchildren.

Details about the upcoming public memorial will be shared in the coming days.
